Aztecs head to Sweet 16 after beating Furman University in NCAA Tournament

Orlando, Fla. — The San Diego State University Men’s Basketball team has advanced to the Sweet 16 after defeating Furman University 75-52 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The win marks the third time in team history that the Aztecs have advanced to the third round during March Madness. The victory also tallies the 11th win in the Aztecs’ last 13 games.

To add to the bragging rights, SDSU’s domination in the second round of the tournament makes them the first Mountain West Conference team to reach the Sweet 16 in half a decade. Conference competitor Nevada was the last team to break through back in 2018.

The Aztecs were led by guard Darrion Trammell who netted 13-points, followed by guard Lamont Butler with 12-points and guard Matt Bradley who racked in 10-points to propel the team towards victory.

For Furman, guard Mike Bothwell led his team with 15-points, followed by forward Alex Williams and guard JP Pegues who each scored 11-points respectively.

Looking ahead, SDSU’s Men’s Basketball team will faceoff against Alabama or Maryland next week with the game set to take place Louisville, Kentucky as part of the South Region semifinals.
