NBA analyst Colin Cowherd apparently wanted to ruffle some feathers on his podcast the other day.

Cowherd took the strong and highly controversial stance that basketball legend and icon Michael Jordan isn’t quite as good as some people make him out to be.

“Take out Scottie Pippen and Phil Jackson, this whole Michael Jordan mythology is sort of just that,” Cowherd said.

While first saying that Jordan is “arguably the greatest basketball player of all time” he then noted that he wasn’t a good baseball player, wasn’t a successful team owner, and had a rough stretch of time with the Washington Wizards at the end of his career.

Cowherd also called him a “selfish player and selfish guy.”

His opinion is definitely one that is going to generate a lot of conversation.

For years now, even those who don’t love the Chicago Bulls and Jordan admit that he’s likely one of the best – if not the very best – basketball players ever.

This has just become the conventional wisdom for most fans.

During his 15 years in the NBA, Jordan was a 14-time All-Star, 10-time scoring champion, five-time MVP, and six-time champion, among many other honors.

His name has become synonymous with greatness.

Cowherd is correct that he hasn’t been as sensational in other parts of his life.

But his denying Jordan’s greatness, even by just a little bit, is going to upset a lot of people.

As time goes on and more players rise through the ranks of NBA history, you can expect more statements like this from other analysts.

The debate around Jordan and other legends of the game will only grow.
